CHANIA - CRETA
Crete, in the Middle of the Mediterranean. The island where - according to mythology- Zeus was born, the father of the Olympian gods, the god of hospitality, but also the island on which the first European civilization of Minos and Ariadne was founded and developed. The legend talks about the abduction of Europe, which was moved to this island by the father of the gods. Today, Crete is still a place of welcome and hospitality for every visitor. Crete, but specifically the county of Chania, impresses its visitors and rightly so. The history, the cultural inheritance, the local people, the historical monuments, the superb natural environment but also the provision of high quality tourist services, make holidays in Crete unforgettable.
Chania, crossroads, of civilization, junction between the countries of the East and Africa, a combination of wild countryside and endless sea, welcomes you. Chania -the "Queen of the Mediterranean", the "Lady of the East", the "Town of Jasmine"- acknowledge by all the most beautiful town of Crete but with the wildest history, welcomes you. Threefold blessed by God with beauty: the highest mountains, bare or snow-capped, reach to the sky. Then the green colour in all its different hues and lastly the sea, graced by the summer sun. With memories and roots from the Minoans and the Kydonites, from the Romans and the Byzantians, from the Arabs and the Venetians, from the Turks and the Germans. Scattered everywhere in villages and towns are memorials.
Unending sandy beaches and wild ravines, inaccessible mountain tops with caves, rare plants, birds and animals, churches, monasteries and venetian castles will embrace you. An intoxicating journey, unforgettable for the generous hospitality of the villagers who, with tsikoudia, village pies and a smile, are ready to welcome you.
The Town of Chania
The most poetic town of Crete, gives you a taste of beauty when you stroll through it. Built on the site of ancient Kydonia, it has seen and lived through many invaders. The tastes of different civilizations have left their stamp on the facades of the buildings, on the castles and walls, ancient sites, monasteries and churches.
The town has two entrances: the airport in Akrotiri (the most advanced in Crete) and the port of Souda (the largest port in the Mediterranean). All the streets lead to the market square, the center of the town. The Public Market, an illustrious building in the shape of a cross, which was completed in 1913, is modelled on the style of the Marseilles. A sign of the prosperity of the town, with the commercial stores around it and to the south, it sells all the produce of the Cretan soil. Always full of people, it stands as a reference and starting point for an introduction to the town.
Only five minutes walking distance from the center the Public Gardens await you, situated between the streets of Dimokratias and Tzanakaki and next to the Park of Peace and Friendship of the Nations. The gardens are the most beautiful in Crete and have a pastry and coffee shop. The public garden also has a small zoo, which includes Cretan animals, such as the "kri-kri", as well as Cretan plants and trees.
The Old Town of Hania
The most beautiful harbour in the Mediterranean!
Hania is built on the site of ancient Kydonia, an important town, which continued to exist until the end of the Second Byzantine period. According to evidence, during the Arab occupation there was a town named "Phiaddh el Djobn", meaning "City of Cheese", in the same location. The name "Khania" originally appears as "Canea" during the Venetian occupation (if it is correct that it evolves from "CHANIA"). It is historically confirmed however, that the Venetians first built the town under the name LA CANEA which thrived and prospered. Before the Venetians, the Byzantines had built fortifications here. During the Venetian occupation, the town of Hania became the most important administrative center of western Crete. In August 1645, Hania was conquered by the Turks following a siege that lasted for two months. The revolution that broke out in the mainland of Greece during 1821 influenced the Cretans, who attempted to liberate the island from Turkish occupation, but their rebellion was suppressed by Egyptian troops. The Egyptians remained in power until 1840 and they exhibited great interest in repairing the old port. A structure that dominates the port of Hania is the light house, which began to be erected by the Venetian in 1570 in the form of a round tower. Its present shape is owed to the Egyptians who rebuilt in circa 1830. Opposite the light house, the Firkas fortress dominates the entrance to the harbour. It was here that the flag of the Greek republic was hoisted in 1913, as the official endorsement of the island's union with the Greek state. After the union with Greece, Hania played a prominent role as a financial, cultural and administrative center of the entire island.
The old quarter of the town "inside the walls" still keeps its Venetian gentility. Narrow, paved sidewalks are surrounded by elegantly restored houses (Venetian and Turkish) which nowadays have become rooms for rent, shops, selling popular art and tourist goods, or Cretan style restaurants. The old port is picturesque at any time of the day or season and is a center of attraction for visitors and locals alike, as much for its beauty, as for the varied choice of entertainment there, choices such as fish taverns and restaurants for the gourmet, coffee shops and cake shops to meet with friends, bars and night clubs for all tastes and ages. But the real walker can enjoy a stroll starting from Koum-Kapi and ending at the Lighthouse or Nea Chora.
Cretan Diet
Cretan soil and its products were matched with the mythology and the ancient gods. The purity, the richness in vitamins and the divine taste of these products made them a quality reference for those interested in healthy nutrition and a subject of research for the scientific community, while their beneficial attributes for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and carcinogenesis have already been proved. The land, the climate, the care in cultivation and mostly the love for quality and the respect for tradition are the reasons for which Cretan goods enjoy worldwide respect.
A Taste of Life
The county of Chania, besides the beautiful town of the same name with its cosmopolitan port, also consists of thousands of secrets corners to relax in or explore, that are just waiting for you to discover them. Enjoy the sea and sun in Georgioupoli, Kalives, Marathi, Stavros, Stalos, Agia Marina, Platanias, Maleme, Kolimbari, Casteli, Gramvousa, Falasarna, Sfinari, Chrisoskalitisa, Elafonisi, Paleochora, Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Sfakia, Frangocastelo, the island of Gavdos etc.
Afterwards, enjoy fresh fish, village salads, fresh greens from the Cretan soil, local wine, tsikoudia and traditional plates of Cretan cuisine at the seaside taverns and restaurants. Of course, good food, a pleasant atmosphere and new places to enjoy can be found inland, where the Greek enjoyment of company or family entertainment often finishes in the early hours of the morning. The feel of the beneficent sun, the excellent Cretan cuisine, the relaxed lifestyle and the warm hospitality of the people will stay in your heart forever.
